Export Packaging for Handmade Products: Buyer Checklist

Export packaging is part of the product experience. A well-made item that arrives crushed, scratched or wet is still a failed delivery.

Handmade products often require packaging decisions that reflect their shape, material and sensitivity.

Separate retail packaging from transport packaging

Retail packaging presents the product to the customer. Transport packaging protects it during handling and shipping.

The two functions may be combined, but buyers should confirm that the presentation packaging can survive the logistics process.

Protect the product’s weakest point

Identify components that bend, break, scratch or detach easily. Handles, closures, ceramic edges, jewellery findings and decorative elements may need specific protection.

Packaging should prevent movement inside the carton.

Avoid excessive compression

Natural-fibre bags, hats and baskets may lose shape if packed too tightly. Some products can be nested, but the method should be tested.

Include shape supports where necessary and explain any reshaping instructions to the buyer.

Control moisture risk

Products should be packed clean and dry. The packaging method should consider humidity during storage and transport.

Materials should not be sealed in a way that traps unwanted moisture.

Use clear carton identification

Cartons should be linked to a packing list and product references. Clear identification helps receiving teams verify quantities and locate specific items.

Check carton weight and handling

Cartons should be practical for normal handling. Very heavy cartons increase damage and workplace risk.

Distribute weight appropriately and reinforce cartons where needed.

Ask for packaging information in the quotation

  • Individual packaging included
  • Units per inner pack
  • Units per carton
  • Carton dimensions
  • Gross and net weight
  • Special handling instructions
  • Custom labels or barcodes

Test new packaging before a large order

For fragile or unusual products, a sample shipment can reveal weaknesses that are not visible during packing.

Packaging can then be improved before the full production shipment.

Good packaging protects margin and reputation

Damage creates replacement costs, customer dissatisfaction and additional administration. Packaging decisions should be treated as part of the wholesale product specification.
